DVD Audio Extractor Frequently Asked Questions
+ - Q1: There are so many encoding formats to choose from. Which one is better?
Different formats are better for different purpose. So it really depends on how you want to use the extracted audio.
  • If you want to playback them on your computer, OGG Vorbis is highly recommended. It can provide better quality and compressing rate than MP3 and support 5.1 Surround mode.
  • If you want to listen them on your portable MP3 player, then you certainly want to use MP3 format. (Unless your MP3 player can also play OGG files. In which case OGG is again recommended.)
  • If you want to reuse the extracted audio, like edit it or convert to other format, then you should use the uncompressed Wave format.
  • Direct Demux is a good idea if you want to get exactly the same audio as it is on the DVD.
  • If you want to create an Audio CD from the DVD, simply use the CD Image and Cuesheet mode or see more details at the answer to next question.

+ - Q2: How can I create an Audio CD form my live concert DVD?

Creating an Audio CD can't be easier with DVD Audio Extractor's newly added CD Image creating feature. Select all the chapters you are interested in and select "CD Image and Cuesheet" mode in Step 2. Go through Step 4 and click "Start". When finished just import the created *.cue file into your favorite CD burning software.

If you want to build a CD with audios from different DVD discs or titles, you can also extract your selected audio to Wave format. In Step 2 select "PCM Uncompressed Wave". And be sure to select 44100Hz sample rate and Stereo because these are the standard format for audio CD. Then you just need to input the resulted *.wav files to your audio CD burning software.

Extracting audios to MP3 and then record the MP3 to Audio CD is a BAD idea. This involves converting from lossless to MP3, and then MP3 to lossless again. Don't do that if you care about audio quality.

+ - Q3: In Step 1, when I press the Next button, I got an error message: "Can not read the selected audio stream. Please try other formats!". What does that mean?

The error means DVD Audio Extractor has difficulty locating the audio track you selected. There are several possibilities:

  • The disc is copy-protected and DVD Audio Extractor has difficulty handling the copy-protection scheme it used.
  • The audio information in *.IFO files mismatch with that on *.VOB files.
  • Part of the DVD disc is damaged or your DVD-ROM has problem reading that disc.

In case this happened, first please select other available formats on the disc and try again. If still failed, run a DVD Copy software and get a copy of the disc onto your hard disk. Then run DVD Audio Extractor in "Browse to file folder" mode. If still get the same error, then there must be an error in the IFO files. Please open the VOB files and extract one by one as a workaround.

+ - Q4: While running the software, it keeps on reading from the DVD-ROM and not responding. What is happening?

This is most likely a problem caused by your hardware -- either part of the DVD disc is damaged or your DVD-ROM has problem reading that disc. Try to run a DVD Copy software and get a copy of the disc onto your hard disk. If that can be successful, then run DVD Audio Extractor in "Browse to file folder" mode.

+ - Q5: Most of the chapters are extracted correctly while some contain noises. Why?

Similar to above, it is most likely caused by hardware reading errors. Try to copy the disc to your hard disk with DVD Copy software and run DVD Audio Extractor in "Browse to file folder" mode.

+ - Q6: In Step 4, after I press the Start button, nothing happened and the status shows "All chapters finished in 1 second". What's wrong?

There is nothing wrong. If you want to overwrite the files in the same output folder, please make sure to check the "Overwrite tracks with the same name" option in Step 3. Otherwise the file with the same name will be skipped. If all the files are skipped then the program will normally stop and report finished.

+ - Q7: Can DVD Audio Extractor be used to extract music from DVD-Audio discs?

Not yet. This is a known limit. DVD Audio Extractor currently only support audios in DVD-Video discs, i.e., it reads VOB files under VIDEO_TS directory. DVD-Audio discs store audio tracks under AUDIO_TS directory and use different formats with DVD-Video.

Suggestion: Many DVD-Audio discs also come with an DVD-Video zone for compatibility with DVD-Video players. In that case, you can extract audios from them as normal DVD-Video discs.

+ - Q8: I want to extract audios from DVD menu instead of DVD titles. Is that possible?

Yes. Simply select "File - Open single DVD VOB file..." in Step 1 and browse to the DVD menu VOB file under the VIDEO_TS folder of the disc.

Usually the main menu is put in VIDEO_TS.VOB and title menus are named in VTS_??_0.VOB. Like VTS_01_0.VOB for Title 1 menu, VTS_02_0.VOB for Title 2 menu, etc.
